Peter Royen - Painting

Deceased † 19th June 2013

Peter Royen, born in Amsterdam, died last year at the age of 90 in Dusseldorf, well-known for his white silent paintings and the great commitment to his fellow artists. The Federal Cross of Merit in 1984 and the artist price of the Düsseldorf artist in 2013 express high esteem for him.
This is the first exhibition since his death exactly one year ago with abstract works from Royen's private collection. Called by Werner Schmalenbach "painter of silence", he worked with geometry and structure, but his paintings are neither strict nor programmatic.
After studying under Otto Pankok Royen remained in Dusseldorf. He had numerous exhibitions in Germany, the Netherlands, as well as in Brazil and Japan. Many important international collectors such as Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, appreciate and own his works.

White is the dominating colour in Royen's work, often in contrast to deep black or yellow squares. He builds pictures of many-layered tiles which rise up, radiating a deep silence through the reduction of colours.

The well-known art critic, Werner Schmalenbach, about Royen:
Of course he is, as you can see in each of his paintings, extraordinarily sensitive. But sensitivity is not really more than a raw material. It is important what comes out of it. Peter Royen is making 'out of it' his silent, poetic, quietly breathing paintings - between the two poles of the strict order of the picture and the freedom of painting. He is a painter of the silence.

Klaus Schröder - Sculpture

Klaus Schröder works in wood, dedicated to radical abstraction avoiding any possibility of association. In this exhibition we show relief wall objects as well as freestanding works. The abstract wall panels entitled "Panel Objects", he has developed 20 years ago and now continues with this theme. While the original panel objects are characterized by several rhythmically placed incisions, on the latest wall objects he discovers a more simple geometry. The free-standing works take on the archaic motif of the arch, which Klaus Schröder recognized on Slavic cemeteries.
Since 1985 he has successful exhibitions all over Germany and participated in numerous art fairs, such as Art Frankfurt.

Mats Bergquist - Sculpture

FlowFineArt Curator John David talks to Mats Bergquist

Mats Bergquist, born in Stockholm, grew up in Russia and Poland, where he came in contact with the tradition of icon painting as a child. Later as an artist, he was interested in how it is made and the effect it has. His abstract, monochrome works are created using the same technique: on a base of wood, many layers of white paint are applied and sanded. His works have a power that makes one pause and contemplate. Bergquist worked and lived with monks, and his creative process is equal to a meditative exercise. In the 80s he studied in Stockholm and Paris, where he still has numerous exhibitions. He also exhibited in Germany, Denmark and Italy, where he currently lives. He has several projects in public spaces, such as in the St. Peter Art Station in Cologne.

Anatoly Burykin - Painting

Anatoly Burykin is inspired by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Konstantin Melnjkov, Aleksander Rodchenko and El Lissitzky. Anatoly often says that his choice of abstract art stems from the unique atmosphere that was created these well-known artists.
His paintings are characterized by a particular depth, calm and balanced awareness. Even at first glance, the high-contrast areas seem alive. The paintings come together through a maturing process, growing in several parts simultaneously - layer by layer. So an ambiguous result is built from an abstract starting point, in which various worlds of emotion and mood are conveyed, particularly through the dominating concept of light and light conditions.
It is obvious that the artist has his origins in architecture, because there is always a certain amount of organization and guideline to be seen. Burykin manages to leave a lot of space for associative interpretations, with minimal resources and by a reduced visual language. In 2010, the artist began a series dedicated to urban landscapes. In this series, Anatoly got his inspiration from the simplicity of the architectural forms, lights and spaces in the city.
He works in a slow and harmonious painting process by applying the colors layer by layer onto the canvas. This creates a play between concealment and revelation that leads first of all to a liveliness, but on the other hand to balance, so making his work distinctive. He gives the finishing touches to his paintings through the top layer, where he makes fine scratches, thereby giving his works a special, structured nature. His paintings can be found in museums and private collections in Austria, Italy, Russia, Canada, Thailand, Finland, France and the United States.

1950 Born in Moscow
studied at the Academy of Architecture and Sculpture in Moscow

Dominica Herbin - Photography

"Dominica brings together philosophy, poetry and passion with light and form, in both black and white and color photography."

Alexandra Shaw

"Dominica derives her impulses from feeling the internal workings of nature which she transforms into a visible form in photography. The synthesis between the outer appearance of an object and the mood which it inspires in a sublime context reveals itself in the strong composition and spatial articulation of her work."

Lon Pennock - Sculpture

Lon Pennock sculptures, mostly from steel or bronze, act in spite of their static nature, as if they could move at any moment. The precision of the arrangement together with the geometric playfulness leave the viewer room for interpretation. Pennock's main theme is the language of the material. So because of their subtle development, it seems as if his impressive sculptures come out of nothing.

Represented in private and public collections in the Netherlands, France, USA, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Sweden and Slovenia. Numerous sculptures in public spaces in the Netherlands and in France.
